CLAY DUST (CERAMICS) Clay dust is harmful to breathe in. Please see the handbook for handling clay policies and procedures located in the ceramics hallway on the bulletin board, or speak with your instructor.
ATTIRE Long hair should be tied back when working with wheels or other electrical equipment. Shoes should be worn at all time, we recommend non-slip shoes and preferably not sandals.
Safety glasses should be worn when performing an eye-threatening activity including standing work and mixing slips, glazes, etc. We have an eye wash station indicated with a green sign by the instructor room at the front of the studio, if needed. A mask should be worn when performing any activity that stirs up clay dust or chemicals.
FOOD
No food is allowed in the studios due to risk of contamination, attracting rodents, and littering. Please do not eat when handling clay for your safety.
GENERAL STUDIO POLICIES
Leave your work area clean and empty for the next person. We are a 'leave no trace' studio. Put all unfinished work on designated shelves.
Keep your voice to a normal speaking level. Take phone conversations outside the studio and keep phones on vibrate. Respect other's need for quiet concentration. If you accidentally disturb, alter, or damage another person's work, let the staff on duty know (Francesca Ira, Ceramics Technician) and leave a note with your contact information and email the studio ceramics tech: iraf@southbendart.org
Open Studio users will be required to fill out a glaze and procedures form in ceramics upon the start of each session and return it to Francesca.
Kiln Loading/ Unloading Kilns are typically unloaded Thursday afternoon/ Friday morning. They are loaded Friday afternoon and Monday. For the glaze kiln specifically it is fired on Tuesday and takes 36-48 hours to cool down. Bisque is fired throughout the week as needed. Please place your piece on the rolling carts across from the kiln room on the appropriate shelves. The kiln is to be loaded and unloaded by the Ceramics Studio Technician or Curator of Education only. Students may not help load/unload/fire the kilns or move any work or materials.
PLEASE NOTE: it is the student's responsibility to clean off the bottom of your piece (and wash it) before placing your piece in the firing area. You may incur a bill if your piece was not properly prepared for firing and causes damage to the kiln shelves. Please contact your instructor if you need help with this step. If there is unrepairable damage a kiln shelf, you will have to pay for it and you will be billed as such.
Large Projects: We treat all works as equal! Your work most likely will be scheduled to be fired and the proper space in the kiln will be prepared. The Ceramics Technician will communicate with you on the firing of larger scale work.
Shelves and Rolling Carts Rolling carts are labeled by GREENWARE or GLAZE, please place your ceramic piece on the appropriate shelf to avoid improper firing resulting in broken or damaged works. Students currently enrolled in either a ceramic class or open studio receive a shelf (limit one per student) to set their pieces/tools. If you are not registered for an open studio or class, please clean off your shelf to allow room for registered students - to avoid losing work left behind after a session.
Serious disagreements among studio members, students or staff should be reported to management using a studio Incident Report Form located in the instructor room. SBMA is not responsible for lost or stolen items if left in the building or studio spaces. Any items left in the studios become property of SBMA if left unclaimed for more than 6 weeks, including unattended or abandoned artwork.
Clean Up
This is a shared studio and must be cared for and maintained by all users. Each studio user is required to clean up any area they utilize. This includes cleaning the wedging tables, the plaster boards for reclaim, community tools, and working tables. Students should clean the wheel and mop the area around the wheel if there is an excess of clay residue left behind. Please only use a wet mop to ensure dust is not stirred into the air. Cleaning the studio minimizes dust in the air and maintains a safe and healthy working space for continued use by our community. Instructors must clean up after their students if any clean up step was missed. Clean up is mandatory after each use of the studio whether it be instructors or individual studio users.
Refiring/Reglazing Refiring and reglazing must be approved by the Ceramic Studio Technician - to ensure a smooth, fair, and effective use of our community studio. Typically, reglazing and refiring will not be allowed, as it could cause further damage to the piece, damage the kiln/kiln shelves, and or damage other students' work. The Ceramic Studio Technician determines the best solution for the needs of the entire studio.
Open Studio Open studio is available for ages 16+ and students who have taken an adult ceramics class with SBMA as a prerequisite. Students may not skip ahead to attend open studios unless they have taken at least one 3 hour full ceramics class so they know how to use the studio, glazes, and the space appropriately or have scheduled a meeting and onboarding with the Education Department and Ceramics Technician to go through a training on the space.
Bags of Clay
Only clay purchased from the SBMA can be used in the kilns in the ceramics studio. Clay can be purchased from the front desk only and given to studio users by a staff member or Ceramics Technician. Adult students enrolled in classes or Open Studios are required to purchase their own clay per session appropriate to the use of the material and projects, excluding Intro to Ceramics which includes 1/2 bag of clay. Open Studio hours may change at any time to meet the needs of the SBMA and upkeep of the studio. Clay can not be resold to other students in bulk, or at a lesser fee.
Studio Concerns/Special Requests
Please communicate your requests/concerns with your instructor first. For Open Studio users, please communicate with the Curator of Education and Studio Programs, Katie Neece neecek@southbendart.org. Faculty can send an email to the education department to communicate any needs related to glazes, equipment use, special requests from students, or any other questions related to our studio. Our Education Department will follow up as appropriate with an email outlining a plan-of-action and an estimated date of completion, if applicable. Please keep in mind that any concerns a student may have pertaining to the museum, our studios, etc. should immediately be communicated to Katie Neece, Curator of Education and Studio Programs, via email neecek@southbendart.org. Following this protocol will allow the Education Department to best address concerns in a documented and organized format. Thank you for your cooperation with this practice.

UNLAWFUL HARASSMENT
BACKGROUND AGAINST UNLAWFUL HARASSMENT
Harassment, in any form, undermines the abilities and potential of employees and customers (members, students, Open Studio users, and other community members).
Defining harassment and its many nuances is difficult. Conduct one person finds objectionable may not be offensive to another. If an employee, studio user, or student experiences conduct that he or she finds unwelcome or offensive, SBMA encourages the employee or person to inform the person engaging in that conduct that it is unwelcome and should stop. If the situation is too uncomfortable to be addressed and is too uncomfortable to be addressed directly, please talk to a staff person as soon as possible.
The following sections of this policy describe unlawful harassment and outline the ways in which SBMA will respond to it. The intent is not to discourage mutual and friendly exchanges among and between employees, students, and studio users, but to enhance awareness and prevent unlawful harassment.
POLICY AGAINST UNLAWFUL HARASSMENT
SBMA strictly prohibits all forms of unlawful harassment which includes harassment on the basis of race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding or related medical conditions), wages, gender, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, marital status, national origin, ancestry, disability (mental and physical, including HIV and AIDS), medical condition, genetic information, age, veteran status, and /or any other characteristic defined by state, federal, or local law.
Our policy against unlawful harassment applies to all employees and customers. Managers and employees are prohibited from harassing co-workers, as well as members, students, venders, suppliers, independent contractors, visiting artists, artists in residence, and others working with SBMA. In addition, members, students, open studio users, vendors, suppliers, independent contractors, and others doing business with SBMA are prohibited from harassing our employees.
Violation of this policy will be subject to an employee, student, or studio user to disciplinary action, up to and including immediate termination.
EXAMPLES OF PROHIBITED SEXUAL HARASSMENT
Sexual harassment includes a broad spectrum of conduct including harassment based on gender, transgender, and sexual orientation (meaning one's heterosexuality, homosexuality, or bisexuality). The sexually harassing conduct does not need to be motivated by sexual desire. By way of illustration only, and not limitation, some examples of unlawful and unacceptable behavior include:
Unwanted romantic or sexual advances
Offering an employment benefit (such as a raise or promotion or assistance with one's career) in exchange for sexual favors, or threatening an employment detriment (such as termination, demotion, or disciplinary action) for an employee's failure to engage in sexual activity).
Visual conduct, such as leering, making sexual gestures, displaying sexually suggestive objects or pictures, cartoons or posters.
Verbal romantic sexual advances, propositions, requests, or comments Verbal abuse of a sexual nature, graphic verbal commentaries about an individual's body, sexually degrading words to describe an individual, suggestive or obscene letters, notes or invitations.
Physical conduct such as touching, assault, impeding or blocking movement.
Physical or verbal abuse concerning an individual's actual sex or the perception of the individual's sex Verbal abuse concerning a person's characteristics such as vocal pitch, facial hair, or the size or shape of a person's body, including remarks that a male is too feminine or a woman is too masculine.
EXAMPLES OF WHAT CONSTITUTES PROHIBITED HARASSMENT
In addition to the above listed conduct, harassment is prohibited when it concerns race, color, religion, national origin, age, or other protected characteristic. By way of illustration only, and and not limitation, prohibited harassment concerning race, color, religion, national origin, age or other protected characteristic includes:
Slurs, epithets, and any other offensive remarks Jokes, whether written, verbal or electronic Threats, intimidation, and other menacing behavior Other verbal, graphic, or physical conduct.
Other conduct predicated upon one or more of the protected categories identified in this policy. If you have any questions about what constitutes harassing behavior, you may contact the Education Department.
Harassment of our students and studio users by our employees is also strictly prohibited. Such harassment includes the types of behaviors specified in this policy, including sexual advances, verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature, sexual comments, and gender-based insults. Any such harassment will subject an employee to disciplinary action, up to and/or including immediate termination.
WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF YOU FEEL YOU ARE, OR HAVE BEEN HARASSED?
If you feel that you are being harassed in violation of this policy by another student, studio user, or employee of SBMA you should immediately contact the Education Department. In addition, if you observe harassment by another employee or customer, please report the incident immediately to management. Appropriate action will be taken in response to violation of this policy.
Employees are encouraged to help eliminate unwelcome behavior by talking with the offending party directly, to let that person know their behavior is unacceptable. Whether or not the person talks with the offending party, the student, studio user or employee should report the behavior so SBMA is able to eradicate all unlawful harassment.
All complaints of unlawful harassment reported to management will be investigated as promptly as possible and corrective action will be taken where warranted. All complaints of unlawful harassment which are reported to management will be treated with as much confidentiality as possible, consistent with the need to conduct an adequate investigation if necessary.
