HSPT Exam Workshop
Description
What is the HSPT: The High School Placement Test is a standardized test for 8th Graders that focuses on Math and English readiness. It is required for application to all local parochial high school such as Bishop O’Dowd and St. Mary’s. This year, the HSPT will be on the morning of January 11.

What is the workshop: The EBI HSPT Workshop is a 10-week, 15-hour course run by Reggie Clodfelter that prepares students with skills and strategies for each individual section of the exam as well as test-taking strategies for the exam as a whole.

Reggie also offers two proctored practice exams with the students over zoom during winter break (dates pending). These include Reggie reminding students of strategies in between each section as well as Reggie helping students score and contextualize their exams and use that to determine a study plan.

This is the sixth consecutive year that Reggie has run workshops for the HSPT for both EBI and Classroom Matters.

When is it: The course will be Fridays after school at the San Pablo campus (in the math room) from 3:20 - 4:50. It will span from Oct 11 to January 10 and will include two Thursdays on weeks when the kids do not attend a full day of school on Friday. The full dates of the workshop are below.

What if my student is taking the ISEE: If your student is applying to non-parochial independent schools (such as College Preparatory School), they will need to take the ISEE (you can register here). This exam is similar enough to the HSPT that I recommend all students taking the ISEE also attend the workshop. The key differences are that the math has slightly higher-level content, and there is a timed essay at the end. Reggie has many years of experience with this exam as well, and can offer independent practice, resources, and advice to students taking this exam. They should contact Reggie ASAP if they are interested.

The ISEE can be taken three times over the year, once in Fall, once in Winter, and once in Spring. I generally recommend students take one in the Fall that they treat as a practice exam and one in the Winter that they treat as the “real thing.”

What will kids need for the workshop: Students will be provided a workbook and notebook. All they will need to bring each week is a snack (we will have a 5-minute break to snack during the workshop) if they would like to eat.
