Employee Only: Camp Mabel February 14, 2025
Description
Camp Mabel is a day program that is offered to all children ages 4 yrs and up of employees of the Latin School of Chicago. Camp Mabel will only be offered during All-School In-service days. The camp will be recreation-based following Mabel Slade Vickery’s wellness philosophy, “get the children outside!”

A little Latin History for you….
“Mabel mandated that all students, even upper schoolers, had 20 minutes of outdoor recreation each day, regardless of weather. She was an avid walker and believed fitness was vital, even for girls, which was a radical notion at the time. All students had to take P.E. (which was a new concept) and she founded the Walking Club to further promote fitness with her students and faculty. If you successfully logged 26 miles of walking during the semester, the reward was an overnight trip to Oconomowoc, WI, where everyone, including Mabel, would snowshoe, sled, and ski! “ ~Teresa Sutter, former Latin Alumni & Research Coordinator, Mabel expert.

In the August and June sessions, we may be taking off-site field trips to local Chicago favorite places and hidden gems. Most trips will take place between 9a-2p, but more information on the logistics of each trip will come out closer to the beginning of the camp.
