Craft Adventurers: Learning Chinese Intangible Cultural Heritage

Class Overview:
This is a 13-session outline for a Chinese Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) crafts experience course designed for preschoolers. The course introduces children to traditional Chinese crafts in a hands-on, playful way that connects them to China’s rich cultural heritage.

Course Objectives:
1.Introduce Chinese Cultural Heritage: Familiarize children with Chinese folk arts, crafts, and traditions in an engaging, hands-on environment.
2.Develop Motor Skills and Creativity: Each craft activity strengthens fine motor skills, coordination, and fosters creativity and self-expression.
3.Foster Curiosity and Cultural Appreciation: Inspire an early appreciation of cultural heritage through fun and meaningful projects that teach tradition and values.



Course Structure:
Sessions 1-3: Traditional Paper Art
These sessions introduce children to colorful paper crafts, such as Chinese paper cuts shadow puppetry, kites and new year paintings, where they’ll create and explore patterns, shapes, and animals with paper.

Sessions 4-8:Embroidery, Silk, and Fabric Arts
Children will learn about traditional fabric arts through simple embroidery, fan decoration, and tie-dye techniques, getting to experiment with colors, textures, and textiles.

Sessions 8-13: Folk Arts and Festival Traditions
children create iconic festival crafts such as dragon masks, lion dance hats, peking opera and traditional chinese costumes, bringing Chinese celebration traditions to life in a fun and colorful way.


After this course, each child will have created a series of unique crafts inspired by traditional Chinese arts. They will take home a deepened appreciation for Chinese culture and valuable early artistic skills. Additionally, each child will develop confidence in their creative abilities as they complete and share their crafts with family and friends.
