Counselor-in-Training Program Outline
Counselor-in-training (CIT): Ages 16 with experience as a Camper at CT for at least 2 years, Age 17 with no prior camp experience.
This program is developed for young men and women who want to have a working experience at Camp Turner. Participants must be 16 years of age before the summer begins, have working papers and complete a CIT application. Those who do well in this program may be invited to apply and interview during this session for a paid position for the remainder of the summer (offers based on camp program needs).
• This program has several skills components including:
• outdoor education
• leadership training
• service learning
• journaling
• spiritual reflection
• discernment
• team building
• staff training
Participants will spend Week (1 ) in staff training with regular camp staff. Week (2) involves service-based learning experiences with opportunities for debrief, reflection and discernment. CITs will assist with many activities around camp during Week (2) and in addition may include cleaning, dishwashing, light maintenance work, taking pictures, serving food, and assisting in other areas of camp as needed.
C.I.T.s join with staff in our StrengthsFinder program to help them learn about their own strengths and the strengths of everyone on staff. Management uses the results to help put staff in areas they enjoy and excel. Staff are expected to leverage their own strengths where possible and lean on the strengths of others when indicated.
Participants will have the opportunity to earn certifications in Wilderness First Aid, CPR, AED, Bloodborne Pathogens at no cost. Additional training topics may include Program Planning, Supervision, Camper Care, Bulling Identification and Intervention, Personnel Policies, Behavior Management, Caring for Special Needs and more.
Participants are expected to spend one hour per evening in a group discussion with their supervisor to reflect upon their experience, particularly with respect to leadership development, personal vocation, their strengths and the strengths of others, and a path to personal growth.
Most senior staff and camp administration have come through this program. Previous experience as a camper (especially Explorers) is helpful. Space is limited to (6)male and (6) female CITs per session. This program is learning focused. There is no backpacking trip required.
