Advanced Reading: Great First Chapters
Description
In this course designed for advanced and motivated readers, students will read and discuss a wide variety of great first chapters, from Moby-Dick and Great Expectations to Harry Potter and True Grit—with all sorts of novels in between. We will examine different approaches to opening a narrative and analyze the writing techniques used to engage, intrigue, and captivate readers. Students will learn about the impact of characterization, point of view, voice, setting, and many other elements of fiction as we plunge into introductions to various universes. After reading and discussing these first chapters, we hope that students will be inspired to read further into some of these novels on their own!
