This hands-on program allows children to get acquainted with a wide array of musical instruments. They’ll have the chance to touch, feel, and play different instruments, helping them discover which one “speaks to them” most. This exploration can spark a lifelong love of music and provide a unique opportunity for your child to find their musical muse. Throughout the semester, kids will see original instruments and create their own versions, enhancing their understanding and appreciation of each instrument.

Week 1: Introduction to Music and Instruments
Topic: Introduction to the world of music and overview of different instruments.
Project: Create simple shakers using everyday materials to understand rhythm.
Week 2: Percussion Instruments - Drums
Topic: Exploring drums and their role in music.
Project: See and play a real drum, then make a hand drum using recycled materials.
Week 3: String Instruments - Guitars
Topic: Understanding how guitars produce sound.
Project: Examine a real guitar, then craft a simple cardboard guitar with rubber bands.
Week 4: Wind Instruments - Flutes
Topic: Exploring how flutes create sound with air.
Project: Play a real flute, then create a straw flute and experiment with different pitches.
Week 5: Xylophones and Marimbas
Topic: Understanding pitch and tone with xylophones and marimbas.
Project: Play a real xylophone, then construct a xylophone using different lengths of metal or wooden bars.
Week 6: Drum Circle and Rhythm Games
Topic: Playing together and understanding rhythm patterns.
Project: Participate in a drum circle using hand drums and shakers made in previous sessions.
Week 7: Latin Percussion - Maracas
Topic: Exploring Latin American percussion instruments.
Project: See and play real maracas, then create maracas using small containers filled with beans or rice.
Week 8: Wind Instruments - Pan Flutes
Topic: Understanding the mechanics of pan flutes and pitch variation.
Project: Play a real pan flute, then construct a pan flute using straws or bamboo sticks.
Week 9: Tambourines and Jingles
Topic: Exploring tambourines and their role in music.
Project: Examine a real tambourine, then create tambourines using paper plates and small jingle bells.
Week 10: Keyboard Instruments - Pianos
Topic: Exploring the basics of keyboard instruments and how they produce sound.
Project: Play a real keyboard, then create a simple paper keyboard to understand note placement.
Week 11: String Instruments - Ukuleles
Topic: Introduction to ukuleles and chord playing.
Project: See and play a real ukulele, then build a simple ukulele using a small box, rubber bands, and a wooden stick.
Week 12: Texture in Music - Rainsticks
Topic: Exploring texture and timbre in music.
Project: Play a real rainstick, then make rainsticks using cardboard tubes and small pebbles or rice.
Week 13: Electronic Instruments
Topic: Introduction to electronic music and sound synthesis.
Project: See and experiment with a simple synthesizer, then create a basic electronic sound maker using a small speaker and a battery.
Week 14: Percussion Ensemble - Rhythm and Coordination
Topic: Understanding the role of different percussion instruments in an ensemble.
Project: Play various real percussion instruments, then create a simple percussion ensemble with homemade instruments.
Week 15: Musical Showcase and Reflection
Topic: Showcasing the instruments created and reflecting on the musical journey.
Project: Organize a mini-concert where students demonstrate the instruments they made and share their experiences, comparing them with the real instruments they learned about.
