In this dynamic musical theater class, students will explore the beloved tale of The Wizard of Oz, discovering iconic songs, vibrant choreography, and the essential values of friendship and bravery. From singing “Over the Rainbow” to dancing with the Munchkins, each week offers engaging activities designed to build confidence, creativity, and teamwork. Students will culminate their journey with a final performance on May 15, where they will bring the enchanting world of Oz to life on stage!

Class will focus on the following aspects:

Week 1: Welcome to Oz!
• Objective: Introduce the musical, its characters, and themes.
• Activities: Discuss the story of The Wizard of Oz, watch clips from the movie, and introduce the opening number, “We’re Off to See the Wizard.”
Week 2: Vocal Warm-Ups & Group Dynamics
• Objective: Build vocal skills and team spirit.
• Activities: Practice vocal exercises, learn the chorus of “We’re Off to See the Wizard,” and emphasize cooperation and enthusiasm in group singing.
Week 3: Character Exploration - Dorothy
• Objective: Develop understanding of Dorothy's character and her journey.
• Activities: Discuss Dorothy’s motivations, rehearse her solo lines, and start learning “Over the Rainbow.”
Week 4: Choreography Basics - Munchkin Dance
• Objective: Learn basic choreography and dance techniques.
• Activities: Introduce a fun dance routine inspired by the Munchkins, focusing on rhythm and energy.
Week 5: The Scarecrow’s Dream - “If I Only Had a Brain”
• Objective: Explore character songs and their meanings.
• Activities: Work on “If I Only Had a Brain,” focusing on vocal expression and comedic timing.
Week 6: The Tin Man’s Heart - “If I Only Had a Heart”
• Objective: Develop singing and emotional expression.
• Activities: Practice “If I Only Had a Heart,” emphasizing melody and heartfelt delivery.
Week 7: The Cowardly Lion - “If I Only Had the Nerve”
• Objective: Learn about bravery through song.
• Activities: Rehearse “If I Only Had the Nerve,” focusing on confidence and stage presence.
Week 8: Exploring Oz - Ensemble Skills
• Objective: Build ensemble skills and teamwork.
• Activities: Create group scenes, practice teamwork in performance, and reinforce the importance of supporting each other on stage.
Week 9: Dance Party - The Munchkin Celebration
• Objective: Combine dance with singing in a fun routine.
• Activities: Review Munchkin choreography and combine it with singing, celebrating the joy of performance.
Week 10: Wicked Witch and the Flying Monkeys
• Objective: Introduce contrasting characters and themes.
• Activities: Discuss the Wicked Witch, rehearse her scenes, and create a spooky dance routine for the Flying Monkeys.
Week 11: Journey Through Oz - Scene Work
• Objective: Explore key scenes and dialogue.
• Activities: Work on scenes with character interactions, practicing dialogue and actions.
Week 12: Finale Preparation - “The Wizard’s Grand Entrance”
• Objective: Prepare for the grand finale.
• Activities: Create a grand entrance for the Wizard and rehearse the final musical numbers, emphasizing teamwork.
Week 13: Full Rehearsal Run-Through
• Objective: Perform the show from beginning to end.
• Activities: Conduct a full run-through, focusing on continuity, character interactions, and stage movements.
Week 14: Feedback and Refinement
• Objective: Address feedback and refine performances.
• Activities: Review areas for improvement, practice adjustments, and reinforce character emotions.
Week 15: Dress Rehearsal Preparation
• Objective: Prepare for the final performance.
• Activities: Run through the show in costumes, practice with props, and finalize staging.
Week 16: Dress Rehearsal
• Objective: Conduct a full dress rehearsal.
• Activities: Perform the show in costumes and with full technical elements, focusing on energy and polish.
Week 17: Final Performance
• Objective: Showcase the students' hard work in a public performance.
• Activities: Perform for family and friends, celebrate achievements, and conclude with group reflections on their journey.
