Refugee Crisis-Junior/Senior Community Service Camp
Description
Refugee Crisis—Junior/Senior Community Service Camp (June 2 – 6)
Grades: 11-12
According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and Dr. Bin Phung (2023), 37 million children affected by political conflict, persecution, and other human rights violations were forced to leave their home countries by mid-2022. At least 3.3 million of these minors have found a new home–whether permanent or temporary–in the United States. Given the context, the goal of this service-learning program is to celebrate World Refugee Day (June 20) by serving refugee children living in the DFW area between June 2 - 6, 2024.
Rising juniors and seniors participating in this camp will learn about the history and the issues affecting specific refugee populations on the first day. On Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday they will visit a local nonprofit to lead educational activities with the students. These include: a Spanish language story time session, bilingual conversational and writing sessions with children, games and crafts, and a celebratory gathering. Students will wrap up the project on Friday by discussing their takeaways from the week and how they used their knowledge and skills in this camp. Students taking advanced language courses in French, Spanish, and Latin are encouraged to sign up.
Rising juniors who participate in this community service camp in Summer 2025 may have the opportunity to travel to San Diego in Summer 2026 to continue their work with refugees and immigration processes on the border between California and Mexico.
Note that participation in this service-learning project fulfills the 15 community service hours required for rising juniors. Rising seniors may also fulfill this requirement with this camp but need to discuss with Parish’s Director of Community Service, Shannon Longfield, to confirm before signing up.
Students will need to provide their own transportation to school and to off-site volunteering.
